International Women’s Day – Debate Motion on “Unconscious bias is immutable. It is the result of and entrenched in our lived experiences, and we should learn to celebrate and harness it.”

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, The Law Society of Singapore’s Women in Practice, in collaboration with the SCCA – Singapore Corporate Counsel Association Women’s Chapter, organised a debate on the motion “Unconscious bias is immutable. It is the result of and entrenched in our lived experiences, and we should learn to celebrate and harness it.”

Our Director, Vanathi Ray, argued as part of the Proposition alongside Shen Yi Thio and Yi Wong against Stanley Park, Adam Maniam and Huifen Zheng. It was a spirited debate moderated by Stefanie Yuen Thio with many laughs and lighthearted moments, but also a time of exploring the impact of unconscious bias in our lives.

While the majority of the audience eventually agreed with the Opposition, the Proposition managed to persuade the most people to change their minds about unconscious bias.

Justice Valerie Thean and SPS Rahayu Mahzam also graced the event with their presence. We extend our gratitude and appreciation to SCCA and Law Society for organising such an inspiring event, and Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP for sponsoring the venue and refreshments.
