Li Shengwu’s appeal allowed

Providence Law Asia’s Abraham Vergis and Asiyah Arif had another successful day in Court on 3 September 2018 when the Court of Appeal allowed our client, Mr Li Shengwu, to appeal to quash a court order that allowed the Attorney-General’s Chambers to serve papers on him in the United States for contempt of court. During the hearing, the three judges repeatedly raised the issue of whether the court has jurisdiction over a foreign-based defendant and what was the basis for that jurisdiction. After hearing the counsel from both sides, the court ruled in favour of Providence Law and its client and gave Mr Li permission to appeal. Although no date has been fixed for the appeal hearing, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon had indicated during the hearing that the appeal should be expedited as it concerned an important question. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/contempt-of-court-case-li-shengwu-gets-permission-to-appeal
