Phoon Wuei’s practice focuses on complex cross-border litigation and international arbitration.

She has acted for and advised multinational corporations, financial institutions, high net-worth individuals and politically exposed people. She has extensive experience of acting in a broad range of commercial and corporate disputes including shareholder and directorship disputes, construction disputes, as well as trusts and private wealth disputes.

Phoon Wuei graduated from the National University of Singapore with an LL.B. She is admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. Phoon Wuei serves as Council Member of the Law Society of Singapore (2025-2026) and sits on its Executive Committee in 2026. 

Phoon Wuei is fluent in English and proficient in Mandarin.

Professional Experience

  • Acted for a global sugar-producer, Burmese-Singapore joint venture in three consolidated SIAC arbitrations involving allegations of minority oppression and breaches of a joint venture agreement for a claim valued at approximately USD 50 million.
  • Acted for a global conglomerate insurance company and its affiliates in consolidated SIAC arbitral proceedings against a major regional financial institution and its affiliates, in a contractual dispute involving a long-term bancassurance distribution arrangement in Indonesia
  • Acted for an international professional golf league in defending consolidated SIAC arbitral proceedings against a Thai golf club for a contractual claim valued at more than USD 80 million arising out of a venue hire agreement.
  • Acted for a Vietnamese stated-invested, Myanmar-based telecommunications operator in SIAC arbitral proceedings against a Burmese telecommunications infrastructure provider in a contractual dispute arising out of a leasing agreement.
  • Acted for major UAE-incorporated project companies in SIAC arbitral proceedings for claims valued at more than EUR 40 million against an Italian-incorporated equipment supplier in respect of, inter alia, the supply of defective aeroderivative gas turbines unfit for purpose and the wrongful termination of the supply agreement in the face of sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States.
  • Acted for a major Korean contractor in SIAC arbitral proceedings against its sub-contractor relating to the construction of a Mixed Development Project in Singapore jointly developed by a Malaysian strategic investment fund and Singapore’s state-owned investment company. Subsequently acted for the Korean contractor in setting-aside proceedings of the arbitral award.
  • Acted for a local buildings operation company in SIAC arbitral proceedings against a major Singaporean government-owned hospital involving contractual claims and counterclaims of more than SGD 110 million.
  • Acted for a major Maldivian reclamation contractor in SIAC arbitral proceedings against its Singaporean sub-contractor relating to the development of residential towers in Maldives.
  • Acted for a Chinese individual and his majority-owned British Virgin Islands-incorporated company in multiple parallel shareholder and directorship disputes against, inter alia, a US-based private equity fund and its directors over an Indonesian subsidiary with a mining concession valued at approximately USD 1 billion
  • Acted for a shareholder and director of a well-known Singapore food and beverage company in defending a claim for shareholder oppression as well as winding-up proceedings, reported as Oon Swee Gek and others v Violet Oon Inc Pte Ltd and others and another matter [2024] 6 SLR 313.
  • Acted for and advised an Angolan politically-exposed person and his family in various criminal proceedings as well as mutual legal assistance requests (from Switzerland and Angola) in relation to allegations of money-laundering, including seeking the release of more than USD 500 million from the Singapore Commercial Affairs Department, reported as Carlos Manuel De São Vicente v Public Prosecutor [2023] 5 SLR 1397.
  • Acted for two Singaporean ministers in respect of defamation and harassment disputes.
  • Acted for a multi-national testing, inspection and certification services provider against its former employee for breaches of restrictive covenants in his employment contract.
  • Acted for a global insurance brokerage and risk advisory firm against its former employee for breaches of restrictive covenants in his employment contract.
  • Acted for an individual in a shareholder dispute and contractual dispute arising from a share purchase agreement in separate but parallel proceedings, reported as Tahnoon Pasha v Hill, Avere Mark and another [2026] SGHC 36.
  • Advised a major regional hospitality group in respect of a dispute with a Maldivian-based hotel arising out of a hotel management agreement.
  • Acted for and advised a jewelry retailer and a white knight in respect of disputes arising out of a rescue and restructuring exercise.
  • Acted as lead counsel in defamation proceedings between Vietnamese individuals involving defamatory posts in Vietnamese, reported as Nguyen Thuy Ha v Tran Thi Bich Ha and another matter [2026] SGDC 84.
  • Acted for and advised a professional trustee in respect of the administration of trusts (valued at more than SGD 100 million) settled by a foreign high net-worth individual and defended legal proceedings in relation to allegations of breaches of trust.
  • Acted for and advised a Court-appointed professional trustee in respect of the administration of the estate of a high profile, high net-worth founder of the Mustafa Centre worth more than SGD 60 million.
  • Acted for a BVI-incorporated trust company set up by a high-profile Chinese entrepreneur in resisting enforcement of a Hong Kong arbitral award against the company’s assets of more than USD 55 million, reported as La Dolce Vita Fine Dining Company Ltd. v Zhang Lan and others [2022] SGHC 89 and La Dolce Vita Fine Dining Co Ltd v Zhang Lan and others and another matter [2022] SGHC 278.
  • Acted as lead counsel, pro bono, in contested probate proceedings for a domestic helper seeking to propound the validity of a will being challenged for want of mental capacity and on the grounds of fraud and undue influence.
  • Advised a global social media platform on compliance with Singapore’s personal data protection laws, including preparing expert statements on Singapore’s personal data protection regime for use in foreign proceedings.
  • Conducted and managed internal investigations for a multinational audit firm, including conducting witness interviews, into alleged potential audit failures linked to compliance breaches in a biomedical storage environment.
  • Advised a multi-national consulting and advisory firm on Singapore’s personal data protection laws and regulations in the context of a data security breach.
  • Advised a multinational consulting and advisory firm on contractual and regulatory implications arising from a nation-wide outage of a digital payment platform as well as potential security breaches.
